Sony Plans Native Token For Entertainment Rights

TOKYO — Soneium, the Ethereum Layer-2 network developed through a joint venture between Sony Group and Startale Group, has revealed plans to launch an ecosystem-native token, $SONEIUM, alongside a dedicated framework designed to bring global entertainment rights on-chain.

The initiative represents one of the most direct efforts by a multinational media conglomerate to bridge mainstream creative intellectual property (IP) with decentralized finance (DeFi) tools, automated licensing, and tokenized revenue streams.

Tokenized Media: The Core of Soneium’s Next Phase

Rather than treating digital assets purely as speculative collectibles, Soneium is positioning tokenized IP as a creator financing and rights-management engine. The rollout aims to cover six primary entertainment verticals:

  • Anime & Manga
  • Music & Publishing Rights
  • Gaming & Interactive Assets
  • Film & Television Media
  • Digital Collectibles
  • Fan-Created & Derivative Content

The network currently hosts over 250 decentralized applications, establishing a testbed for testing how traditional copyright holders and fan communities share downstream commercial revenues.

“This framework focuses on creator financing rather than a conventional token issuance,” stated Yuji Kumagai, Head of Soneium Protocol. The objective is to help creators fund production at scale while providing audiences with verifiable participation in media growth.

Pilot Programs: Japanese Character IP and K-Pop Royalties

To demonstrate real-world utility, Soneium outlined initial pilot integrations scheduled across Asian entertainment hubs:

  • Moriusa: A popular Japanese character franchise managed by Tokyo-based entertainment studio Super State Holdings, piloting character licensing and merchandising rights on-chain.
  • DayOneDream (WAVIST Platform): A partnership tokenizing commercial revenues and performance royalties connected to major live K-pop concert businesses.

Alongside these projects, Soneium revealed plans for specialized financing mechanisms, including IP Vault, IP Bond, and a dedicated stable asset model (ipUSD), aimed at allowing retail and accredited investors to tap directly into media revenue yields.

Technical Framework: Soneium’s On-Chain IP Architecture

Soneium’s platform introduces a three-tiered infrastructure system engineered to resolve licensing ambiguities and execute real-time royalty splits:

  1. IP Registry: An immutable on-chain record documenting legal ownership titles, master copyright assignments, and registered creators.
  2. IP Graph: A dynamic relationship mapping system tracking derivative licensing, remixes, adaptations, and sub-distributor relationships.
  3. IP Execution Layer: Smart-contract-driven payment routing that enforces commercial terms and automatically disburses earnings to original rights holders whenever downstream assets are monetized.

The infrastructure is also designed to support emerging AI-friendly standards, such as the proposed ERC-8432, which embeds machine-readable usage permissions and licensing fees directly into media files.

Strategic Opportunities and Industry Challenges

While Sony’s broader corporate umbrella includes major global properties like Sony Pictures, Sony Music, and PlayStation, Soneium’s announcement did not specify whether these flagship assets will directly integrate into the protocol.

Bringing high-value entertainment rights onto public distributed ledgers presents practical and regulatory complexities:

  • Cross-Border Securities Compliance: Structuring yield-bearing debt instruments like “IP Bonds” requires alignment with varying financial regulators across the US, EU, and Japan.
  • Valuation & Transparency: Projecting royalty payouts in creative media is notoriously volatile, necessitating transparent, auditable off-chain accounting to verify on-chain settlements.
  • Traditional Contracting Friction: Legacy licensing models rely heavily on paper agreements, territorial exclusivity, and long settlement cycles, creating friction when migrating to transparent, borderless smart contracts.

If Soneium successfully solves these structural challenges, the rollout of the $SONEIUM token and its underlying rights infrastructure could set the standard for how multi-billion-dollar media companies monetize creative IP in the Web3 era.
