HELSINKI — In its largest single investment in Europe to date, Google’s parent company Alphabet has announced a €13 billion ($15 billion) expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) data center network and clean energy infrastructure in Finland.

The mega-investment, set to unfold across 2027 and 2028, highlights the tech industry’s escalating battle to secure stable, low-carbon power supplies for compute-heavy AI services like Gemini, Search, and YouTube.

  • Three New AI Hubs: Google will construct three brand-new data centers in northern Finland—specifically in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala—while expanding its long-running flagship facility in Hamina.
  • Historic 22-Year Nuclear Deal: As part of the rollout, Google signed a 22-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Finnish state-owned utility Fortum. Google will buy up to 50% of the electricity output from the Loviisa nuclear power plant between 2030 and 2049, marking Google’s first international nuclear PPA outside the U.S.

  2. Naturally Cold Climate: Low ambient temperatures significantly lower cooling energy requirements, utilizing innovative setups like seawater cooling and waste-heat recovery networks that warm local homes.
