Citigroup Deepens Crypto Push, Partners With Coinbase for Stablecoin Payments

NEW YORK — Wall Street banking titan Citigroup is accelerating its digital-asset push through an expanded alliance with Coinbase, tapping the crypto exchange’s institutional infrastructure to enable corporate clients to accept stablecoin payments.

The move marks another major milestone in the convergence of traditional banking rails and digital-asset technology, bringing regulated corporate clients closer to frictionless cross-border settlement.

Expanding on an Established Foundation

The deepened integration builds upon an agreement initially forged between Citi and Coinbase in late 2025. While their early collaboration focused primarily on the on- and off-ramps linking fiat currencies with digital assets, this latest phase directly targets enterprise payment rails.

By integrating Coinbase’s infrastructure, Citi aims to facilitate direct fiat-to-stablecoin conversions and enable commercial clients to receive digital-asset payouts without managing underlying protocol complexities.

While Citi and Coinbase have not yet publicly disclosed the specific stablecoin assets (such as USDC or USDT) or blockchain networks supported under the new payment pipeline, the initiative highlights growing corporate demand for faster, lower-fee international settlements.

Citi’s Four Pillars of Digital-Asset Strategy

The Coinbase integration fits squarely into Citigroup’s broader multi-year blueprint for institutional digital finance, which centers around four strategic pillars:

  1. Citi Token Services (CTS): Expanding tokenized deposits and smart contract-based settlement to automate trade finance and multi-currency liquidity management.
  2. Blockchain Interoperability: Bridging private bank networks with public and consortium ledgers to eliminate fragmented liquidity pools.
  3. Institutional Custody & Tokenization: Scaling enterprise-grade safeguards for native digital assets alongside real-world asset (RWA) tokenization.
  4. VASP Banking Rails: Supplying institutional banking infrastructure and clearing rails to compliant virtual-asset service providers.

Accelerating Institutional Adoption: Custody and Tokenized Assets

Citigroup has steadily expanded its footprint across institutional Web3 products. Earlier this year, the bank introduced Custody+, confirming plans to roll out native digital-asset safekeeping—starting with Bitcoin—directly alongside its conventional custody offerings.

Beyond custody, Citi has pioneered tokenized capital market instruments:

  • Digital Depositary Receipts (DDRs): The bank issued blockchain-based depositary receipts representing equity shares in private enterprises on regulated network rails operated by SIX.
  • Swift Ledger Integration: Citi became the first U.S. financial institution to process live, native transactions utilizing Swift’s shared-ledger architecture.

What It Means for Wall Street and Stablecoins

As corporate treasurers evaluate stablecoins for supply-chain settlements, payroll, and 24/7 liquidity operations, traditional lenders face a pivotal choice: construct internal crypto rails from scratch or partner with battle-tested crypto-native leaders.

By anchoring its stablecoin settlement layer to Coinbase’s infrastructure, Citigroup bridges institutional governance and blockchain agility—signaling that corporate stablecoin adoption is transitioning from experimental sandbox projects into standard institutional banking products.
