The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has opened recruitment for an AI Security Researcher / Engineer to join its Protocol Security team. The strategic hiring move signals a major shift toward automated, AI-assisted vulnerability discovery across the core architecture of the second-largest blockchain network.
According to the global remote job listing, the new hire will focus on using artificial intelligence, fuzz testing, and automated security tooling to safeguard Ethereum’s consensus and execution layers, smart contract specifications, networking stacks, and client implementations.

The expansion follows successful internal experiments where the EF deployed a coordinated swarm of multi-agent AI systems against core protocol code. That initiative yielded tangible results, unearthing a critical, remotely triggerable panic flaw in the network’s peer-to-peer networking library (libp2p gossipsub), which was subsequently patched and logged as CVE-2026-34219.
However, the experiment highlighted a fundamental industry bottleneck: while AI agents can flag thousands of theoretical bugs per hour, triage and verification require human expertise. The newly created position aims to bridge this gap by refining automated fuzzers, filtering AI-generated false positives, and auditing upcoming protocol hard forks.
The initiative forms a core pillar of Ethereum’s overarching “Trillion-Dollar Security” mandate. As institutions and Layer-2 scaling solutions increasingly rely on Ethereum mainnet as a settlement layer, the costs of a protocol-level exploit become catastrophic.
By pairing high-speed AI reconnaissance with seasoned protocol engineers, the Ethereum Foundation aims to create a proactive defense framework capable of securing billions in decentralized assets before malicious actors can exploit underlying code flaws.
