The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has opened recruitment for an AI Security Researcher / Engineer to join its Protocol Security team. The strategic hiring move signals a major shift toward automated, AI-assisted vulnerability discovery across the core architecture of the second-largest blockchain network.

That initiative yielded tangible results, unearthing a critical, remotely triggerable panic flaw in the network’s peer-to-peer networking library (libp2p gossipsub), which was subsequently patched and logged as CVE-2026-34219.

However, the experiment highlighted a fundamental industry bottleneck: while AI agents can flag thousands of theoretical bugs per hour, triage and verification require human expertise. The newly created position aims to bridge this gap by refining automated fuzzers, filtering AI-generated false positives, and auditing upcoming protocol hard forks.
